Achilles Intraclub Relay - 24 September 2011 Some stiff competition, good spirited banter and plenty of laughs saw Heritage Day celebrated in style. Results are still pending but unofficially on handicap, the Kneecaps ran in first, then the Grey Caps (with some help from a couple of young bloods, then the Red Caps, then the Invitiationals followed closely by the Blue Caps, the Black Caps, White Caps and finally last but not least the Handicaps. The 2011 1-Mile Dash dates have been set. There are 5 x 1-Mile Dashes. Run at least 3. Each will count 0.5 points towards our Brian Bands Participation League for the year. These are great fitness indicators and you can also score merit points (see Merit Points Table under Club Incentives). the first 1-Mile Dash takes place on Thursday, 24 March 2011. Dates for the rest of the year are: 12 May, 11 Aug, 15 Sept, 10 November. Start from the club at 5.30pm, run approx 3km warm-up, run 1 mile and then finish with a cool down 3km or more if you want more k's. Most Achilleans and the EP Running fraternity would have heard of Mof's unfortunate accident which happened on Thursday. At work and while he was directing traffic on site, a Cherry Picker unfortunately drove over Mof's lower legs resulting in multiple fractures to both lower limbs. Mof was operated on on Friday, 4 March. Depending on the success of the operation, Doctors are confident that Mof should be back on his legs and on the road by the end of the year. Norm-Hudlin Trails is run by Lex and Sharon Holmes from their property in Kragga Kamma Rd. Lex has prepared various routes which offers biking and running trails of up to 20km (you don't have to go the full distance and can turn or cut short for any distance you feel like doing). You pay R10 per visit or they also offer a 6-month membership for R100 which allows you to run or bike on their property as often as you want to in that 6-month period (there are also family, pensioner and scholar packages). Graham Channon has the 2011 licences. Please note that 2011 licences will only be issued on proof of payment of Annual Achilles Club Fees and on completion of the 2011 ASA Licence Form. Athletes may compete in their 2010 Licences until the end of January. Graham C will be at the club on Tuesday, 18th of January 2011 from 5pm to hand out the 2011 numbers to those who have completed the 2011 ASA Licence Form and paid their subscriptions. The annual Beer Run once again proved to be a fun evening. The Soccer Girls and Men-in-Ties enjoyed many Pub stops and an unplanned hike up-the-garden-path. A new stop, PAG, proved to be especially interesting with a Tour through History, Bar Antics and a Lucky Draw. On to Stage Door and much needed sustenance and good old dancing. Up another set of steps, over the Donkin and onwards to Castro's (via Adult World of course). A fantastic evening had by all! Aspen Marathon and 10km - 4 December 2010 What an interesting event and interesting Achilles results! Windy conditions did not prevent some excellent times. Daryl, Bradley Mac and Benny all contributed points to the EP League with the Men finishing SECOND on the day!! Daryl achieved a pb and finished 2nd overall. Well done, D. Thanks to the running community and all Llewellyn's family and friends for participating in a very successful fundraiser for CANSA. We have managed to raise in excess of R3500 with monies still coming in via EFT. There were some close shaves and interesting hair colours! Thanks to all especially the Hair Cutters, Clive of Clive's Hair Salon in Newton Park and Susan Baylis of Sue's Home Salon (for Keith and Warren). Those clippers worked overtime and were hot to the touch. Thanks to Alan Taylor who came up with the concept and organised the wors and rolls for the Boerewors Rolls and helped to braai them. To Digby, Peter 'O K and all the guys who assisted with the braaing, Tommy for making the Boerewors Rolls and handling the sales and to Anche for putting the event together. Thanks to Christine who did a great colour spraying job. The monies will be handed over to CANSA the week after next to give those who still want to contribute to this worthy cause more time. 18 Achilleans travelled to Port Alfred to participate in the Kowie 27km and 10km. Kowie Striders is going to make a concerted effort to convince EPA to change their race date for 2011 ensuring that the Meiringspoort and Kowie Events do NOT fall on the same day. This will allow EP runners to support both events and help ensure that the Kowie 27km, which is also a great event, survives. Full Results 27km and 10km. The Achilles Brian Bands Participation League has been updated. EPA League has been updated. We were 1st in the Participation League on the day in spite of only 17 runners participating in the 27km!!! Well done!!! Although the Official Results have not been circulated yet, it can be assumed from all the e-mails that are doing the rounds (some "crowing" and some full of excuses, latest being of "nocternal overexertion" the night before the event), that the White Caps narrowly beat the Blue Caps with the Black Caps following and the Red Caps bringing up the rear. Please be advised that the funeral service for Llewellyn Clack will take place on Wednesday, 15 September 2010 at 15h00 at the St Marks Church in Cape Road, Linton Grange. There will be an opportunity during the service for any club chairman / member to pay individual respect to Llewellyn. We had 29 Achillians starting out from Pietermaritzburg on Sunday morning (Bramwell Fleurs snuck in under the radar. We did not realise Jody Fleurs was one of ours. We thought he was a Bloem Achillean. We always have quite a few of them erroneously listed under our list of entrants at both Two Oceans and Comrades each year. Apologies, Bramwell. Unfortunately we had 28 finishers as Craig Harwood tore a hamstring which had been bothering him since the Andre van Coller Half. Bad luck, Craig. Having said that, 28 is a fantastic number of finishers and the highest for Achilles for many years. Well done to all!!!
