Achilles is one of the oldest established running clubs in Port Elizabeth and for that matter the Eastern Cape Province, having been established in 1936.
The club has its “home” at the Walmer Golf Club (River Road, Walmer). The facilities at the club are excellent and runners can enjoy a hot shower and a few beers after a run. Despite its long existence the Achilles club is relatively small, and has a membership of approximately 100 running members, plus a few social and non-running members. The club feels this provides for a friendly and special relationship among its members, which is usually lost in large less personal running clubs.
Visitors are, however, always very welcome and we enjoy large support of non-members on our training runs. Runners wishing to join the club are encouraged to attend the club runs in order for both members and the aspiring members to see how they fit in, before they apply for membership. This procedure may sound cumbersome, but Achilles have felt it is a formula that has served them well over the many years of its existence. Club Runs are run on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings from Walmer Golf Club at 5.30pm and distances range from 5km to 16km. The club is well represented in both cross country and road running and our members have performed well in both the local league competitions and the SA Champs, in shorter distances as well as marathon races. Road running is however the dominant area of participation.

Full 10km Results/ Achilles Results. Updated Brian Bands Participation League and EP League. 44 Achilleans ran this wet, fast course. PB's aplenty! Well done to Michael Bester , Daryl North, Wayne Mitchell, Peter O'Kennedy, Anche Schubert and Lizel Faber (Apologies if anyone was missed). On the day we were 7th in the Men's Prestige League (Michael B contributed), 2nd in the Ladies Prestige League (Christine, Anche and Lesley W contributed) and 2nd in the Participation League and we are now 3rd overall in all three Leagues and the highest I can remember us being for the Men's League. Merit Awards were earned by Michael Bester, Christine Claasen, Sizinzo Kama, Daryl North, Bennie Stadler, Roger Trader and Lesley Wood. Sharwoods Supaquick Merit Awards.
Vernon Prins passed away on Monday, 26 March 2012 - Sincere condolences to his family and friends from all at Achilles.This mail from Derek Hoshe:
"A memorial service will be held at Vernon Prins' home 22 Fember Street, Bloemendal (next to Bertram Road High School) tonight at 7pm. All runners and friends are urged to attend. The funeral is on Saturday, 31 March 2012, Audrey Renecke Church, West End, starting at 2pm. We appeal to runners to wear their club colours or EPA colours. A guard of honour will be formed from the gate of the church and at the grave. We look forward to your support. Vernon was a true Ambassador for athletics and in particular road running. Sizinzo Kama represented EP in the SA Marathon Champs in George on 05 Feb 2012. He finished in an unofficial time of 3:11:30 and in silver position as he was 2nd in his age category. He sounded very happy with his result but complained that his legs started cramping in the final stages of the race. Well done Sizinzo!!!
